Art
Masks are the main art form of Cote d’lvoire. Masks have a lot of meaning and a lot of purposes. They can symbolize supernatural, the decreased, and even animals. Masks can also be said to be dangerous, as only powerful people are permitted to use/keep them. It is said that it is dangerous to wear certain masks, as they say masks have a soul, and when a person has contact with the mask, the person is transformed into them.
The most popular masks are made by the Baoule, Senufo, Dan and Guro tribe. The Senufo and Dan are influenced by the Baoule tribe.
The Dan tribe’s culture are mostly about nature beings. Pretty much mother nature.
The Senufo lies between Ivory Coast and Mali. They have a caste system. A caste system is a chart which shows the most powerful people, to the lowest part of society. Sculptors are in the low part of the system and the farmers are on a higher system with a higher raise.
Other forms of Ivory Coast art include; wooden dolls, pottery, weaving, wooden spoons and sculpture.
The bush-spirit mask is not made of any electrical thing, in fact, its hand made, and to prove that, the mask can be human, an animal or even a mythical creature! And I bet a computer can’t do or make anything like that! To my information, I think they (Ivory Coast people) use the masks mostly for dancing, but I also think they use their masks for hunting, because in some movies they use their masks for hunting, so it might be true.
The Ivory Coast people also make status, and some of them are made of gold, brass, wood and other materials. Some masks are also made in the “Baovle tribe, Senuvofo tribe, and the Dan tribe”.
